Catawba County man gets at least 20 years for 2012 fatal shooting

A Catawba County man was sentenced to at least 20 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in a 2012 shooting.

Quavis Shamar Propst, 26, of Vale, shot into a Ford Escape on Hope Road, killing 40-year-old Aaron Ruff, authorities said. The shooting was in response to a fight between Propst and Ruff several weeks earlier, the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office said.

Another person in the SUV was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two others in the vehicle were uninjured.

Propst also pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon.
