Driver arrested 2 days after hit-and-run in northeast Charlotte

Police in Charlotte have arrested a man they say is responsible for a hit-and-run in northeast Charlotte Wednesday afternoon.

Derrick Charles Bell, 36, is charged with felony hit and run and no operators license.

The incident happened around 1:23 p.m. Wednesday on the 4000 block of N Tryon Street. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a silver and grey Pontiac Montana struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene.

Medic took the pedestrian to Carolinas Medical Center in serious condition. The victim's name has not been released.

Police then released photos of the minivan believed to be involved which were caught on nearby surveillance cameras.

Detectives said they received several Crime Stoppers tips about a vehicle matching the description. Bell was arrested Friday and taken to CMPD Headquarters where he was interviewed. After that interview, he was charged and sent to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
