Bat-wielding man killed by Iredell deputies identified

A man fatally shot by Iredell County deputies had assaulted two people with a bat and was coming after the officers, according to a report released Monday.

Clayton Thomas Millsaps, 29, of Statesville, was shot by deputies who were called to investigate a disturbance at 124 Estes Road at 9:41 p.m. Friday, according to a report by Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell.

When deputies arrived, the suspect ran from a hiding place at the edge of a wooded area. He was armed with an aluminum bat and began to assault one of the people who had called for help, knocking that person to the ground, the report said.

The suspect then assaulted a second person who had tried to intervene, according to Campbell’s report. The suspect charged the deputies when they tried to assist. The deputies fired on the man when he charged them, disregarding their orders to stop and drop to the ground, the report says.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

The deputies involved in the shooting were David Golden and Danny Wyatt. Both have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a shooting. Each has more than 10 years in law enforcement, according to Campbell’s report.
