Union Co. school district picks teacher of the year
A Sandy Ridge Elementary kindergarten teacher has been named teacher of the year by the Union County school district.
Lisa Austen received the honor at a district banquet Thursday night.
Austen has taught pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grades for 19 years. Sandy Ridge Principal James Eversole called Austen a dedicated, caring and patient teacher, according to a news release from the district.
In the release, Austen stated that her goal for her students is to create a stimulating environment where they feel accepted, safe and loved. “I have watched my students learn and grow over the years because of the love and trust we have for each other,” she stated.
As part of the award, Austen received a one-year lease of a new car from Union County Kia.
