CMS cancels classes Friday following severe weather
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools canceled classes for Friday due to the threat of flash floods and power outages across Mecklenburg County.
The decision, made early Friday, came as the National Weather Service warned high winds and gusts in the 45 mph range would make travel hazardous by tossing debris into roads and knocking over trees.
Overnight Thursday, flash flooding remained a threat in the region and 20,000 power outages affected homes in north Charlotte.
CMS said the cancellation applies to both for both students and staff Friday.
“Changing conditions overnight, including power outages at a dozen schools, impacts of continued strong winds and road conditions across the county, have created unsafe driving for school buses and students getting to schools,” the district said in a press release.
“All CMS practices and games, as well as school events and after-school activities are canceled. CMS staff has been in contact with local authorities throughout the morning to assess conditions in Mecklenburg County.
“The make-up day will be Monday, Feb. 17. “
High winds a problem
High winds remain a danger on Friday. Gusts 15 to 25 miles will be common and could reached 45 mph around the Charlotte area, the NWS said.
“Use extreme caution if working outdoors today, especially under trees or power lines. Wet soils from recent heavy rainfall may result in weakened root systems, causing more trees to fall from lower than usual wind speeds,” a NWS release said.
A wind gust of 53 mph was reported in the Raleigh area early Friday.
On Thursday, a line of severe storms led to the deaths of two drivers, spawned a tornado, downed trees and power lines, and left up to 23,000 Duke Energy customers in Mecklenburg County without power.
As of Friday morning, 19,000 customers remained without power in the Eastway/Hickory Grove area of Charlotte.
