CMS discusses restarting in-person learning. Here’s how to watch tonight.

Update: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted 6-3 Wednesday to begin a phased reopening plan for in-person learning. Read the latest on CMS returning to the classroom here.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education will hold a special meeting Wednesday night. On the agenda: A plan that would gradually bring students back to school for in-person instruction.

The board will also discuss possible employee furloughs, according to the meeting agenda.

Due to coronavirus concerns, CMS began the school year last month with virtual only instruction. An advisory committee has designed metrics for bringing students back to in-person instruction.

The plan under consideration outlines a possible switch from remote to in-person learning based on the level of community spread of COVID-19 in Mecklenburg County, as well as other preparedness factors in the school district.

Based on the district’s guidelines for reopening and the current public health trends, CMS students would most likely first return to classrooms on a limited basis, the Observer has previously reported.

As school leaders consider plans to return to in-person learning, some teachers have said they’re concerned older heating and cooling systems could increase the risk of spreading COVID-19.
