Students looking to transfer to a UNC System school or to another UNC System campus now have a clearer path to get there with a new database that will save them time and money in earning a college degree.

The UNC System launched its Common Numbering System, composed of over 1,600 undergraduate, lower-level courses across campuses in the UNC and N.C. Community College systems. Now, students will know exactly what psychology, history, math or biology classes match at other institutions to ensure they get full course credit when they transfer schools.

Students, parents, advisers and registrars can search the online database to see what credits easily transfer between community colleges and UNC System institutions. The project will make the transfer process more seamless and cost-effective because students aren’t wasting money on courses that won’t be recognized at their new school.

Faculty and staff across the system collaborated on creating this new tool, which took about two years to complete though the idea has been talked about for decades.

“Students have long dealt with a complex transfer process that didn’t always recognize credits completed at another UNC institution or a community college,” UNC System President Peter Hans said in a statement. “This important tool will help expand access to our world-class institutions, benefiting the one-third of our students who will transfer from a community college or another UNC System institution during their college experience.”

In fall 2021, about 16,800 students transferred into the UNC System, according to enrollment data. Nearly 10,000 came from state community colleges and about 2,200 transferred from one UNC system campus to another.

Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte are the top two institutions sending students to UNC System schools.

UNC-Charlotte enrolled the most transfer students from community colleges with about 2,100 transferring to its campus in the 2021-22 school year. UNC-Wilmington and East Carolina University followed, each with about 1,700 transfer students from community colleges that year.

The UNC System’s website that hosts the database and course list also provides transfer resources and course information from each of the 16 universities. Students can also get information about how courses will transfer from the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.
