Construction, permit issues delay opening of new south Charlotte school, CMS says

The Elon Park relief school scheduled to open for the 2023-24 school year, will be delayed a year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials announced Friday.

The new elementary school will now open in the 2024-25 year. Officials cited construction delays and issues with permitting. The delay decision will ensure minimal disruption to learning, officials said.

“We understand that this news may come as a disappointment to our students and families, but we want to assure them that our top priority is to ensure continuity and minimize disruptions to learning,” CMS Chief Operations Officer Brian Schultz said in a news release. “We have worked with district leaders to develop a plan to accommodate students during the 2023-24 school year.

Schultz said the district will keep students and families informed as it works to open the school in 2024.

The new 45-classroom school will provide relief for Elon Park, Hawk Ridge and Polo Ridge schools. It’s located on 11000 Beau Riley Road across from Ardrey Kell High School.

Students assigned to the new school for the 2023-24 school year will remain at their current school.

“We are committed to providing our students with the best possible education, and we believe that delaying the opening of the new school until the 2024-25 school year is the best decision for our students and families,” Interim Superintendent Crystal Hill said.
