Lake Norman High student disciplined after posting racist photo

A student at Lake Norman High School was disciplined Friday after posting a racist photo on social media, the assistant superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools confirmed to The Charlotte Observer.

The district investigated after the photo was shared across social media and included the student in a Lake Norman High graduation robe wearing a “white pointed hat that commonly represents white supremacy,” said Boen Nutting, the assistant superintendent. The photo was taken on Lake Norman High’s campus and wasn’t posted on a district or school page, Nutting said.

The photo had the caption: “The South will rise again.”

In a letter to parents that went out Friday, the school officials wrote: “Lake Norman High School and the Iredell-Statesville Schools do not condone this unacceptable act of discrimination.”

District officials also are asking anyone with information regarding the photo to reach out to the school’s administration.

“Racial harassment, discrimination, hate speech, or degradation of any kind will not be tolerated and does not represent our high school or our school district,” the letter said. “Acts such as this are a disgrace to our community, and those involved will be disciplined to the fullest extent.”

Lake Norman High is in Mooresville and enrolls about 1,900 students.
