Loaded gun found in Rocky River High School student’s backpack, CMS confirms
A loaded gun was found in a student’s backpack this morning at Rocky River High School and confiscated, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed.
“Today, a firearm was found on a student on campus. Administration contacted law enforcement and an investigation is underway,” the district wrote in an email sent to Rocky River families. “The weapon has been confiscated, and at this time there is no threat to students and staff.”
CMS said the student who brought the gun violated its code of conduct and will be disciplined according to the handbook.
Rocky River High School is located in Mint Hill near Interstate 485. The district declined to give further specifics of the situation, as it is still an ongoing investigation.
This is the fourth gun found on a CMS campus this school year. Last year, six guns were confiscated.
Still, the district has made significant progress over the last two years. In the 2021-2022 school year, 29 guns were confiscated from students on CMS campuses. CMS officials say the decrease is due in part to steps taken by the district, such as body scanners installed at every high school and some middle schools.
