Charlotte-area schools announce Friday closings with snow, ice expected. Here’s the list
Schools districts across the Charlotte region are announcing schedule changes in preparation for winter weather Friday and Saturday.
A winter storm watch is in effect for counties across the Carolinas. Up to 5 inches of snow is expected across the mountains and north of the Interstate 40 corridor in the Piedmont. A wintry mix is expected across the rest of the area, with up to 2 inches of combined ice and snow. Locally higher amounts are possible.
Winter precipitation is expected to start Friday afternoon in the Charlotte area.
The following are school closures across the Charlotte area.
School closings
▪ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced it will have a remote learning day Friday.
“The full day of remote learning will include asynchronous instruction only, which means students will have assignments that they will take home on Thursday, January 9 that they will need to complete independently and turn in on Monday, January 13,” the district said on its website Thursday.
There will be no after-school activities or athletic events held Friday. In-person instruction will resume Monday, Jan. 13.
▪ Cabarrus County Schools will be closed Friday.
“There will not be a make-up day, due to additional hours built into the calendar,” Philip Furr, CCS communications director, said in an email to The Charlotte Observer.
All athletic, extracurricular and community use events are canceled from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 12.
Furr advised that employees should visit the district’s finance department website for reporting instructions.
▪ Catawba County Schools will be closed Friday with an optional teacher workday.
The district-wide spelling bee is postponed and rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 7, the district announced on its website. Parents and students will be notified of any additional delays or plans Sunday afternoon.
▪ Chester County School District will go to remote learning Friday, and all district facilities will be closed Friday through Sunday, the district announced on its website.
▪ Clover School District will move to e-learning Friday. Students will be given assignments, but won’t log on for live instruction. Staff will be available online 8-11:30 a.m. Friday to assist students if needed.
▪ Fort Mill School District announced its facilities will be closed Friday and classes will be via e-learning.
“Schools will follow up with specific instructions regarding lessons and class assignments,” the district wrote in a news release. All after-school activities and athletics events Friday are canceled.
▪ Gaston County Schools will have a remote learning day for students Friday.
“It will be asynchronous learning, which means students will work at their own pace at home on assignments provided by their teachers,” the district announced Thursday afternoon. “All school events, including athletics, are canceled Friday and this weekend.”
Friday will be a workday for teachers and staff, and they will be sent home at 11:30 a.m.
▪ Hickory City Schools will have a remote learning day Friday.
”Students should be prepared to engage in remote learning activities, and teachers will share instructions and assignments through their usual platforms,” the district announced Thursday on its website.
▪ Iredell-Statesville Schools will do remote learning Friday, according to the district’s website.
Students will not report to campus but are expected to complete assignments and participate in virtual instruction as communicated by their teacher.
All after-school extracurricular and athletic events are canceled Friday.
▪ Kannapolis City Schools said in an announcement on its website that there’s no school Friday.
▪ Lancaster County School District will close Friday, and students will go to e-learning. All school buildings and facilities will be closed Friday through Sunday, canceling all events and activities scheduled in that time.
▪ Lincoln County Schools will be closed for students Friday.
It will be an optional workday for staff, with early release as needed.
▪ Mooresville Graded School District will have a remote learning day Friday. “All learning will be asynchronous which does not require virtually meeting with the teacher,” the school system said on its website. “Buildings will be closed to students.” Before- and after-school programs will be closed. Extra-curricular activities are canceled Friday and Saturday.
▪ Rock Hill Schools announced Friday will be an e-learning day for students and staff, due to concerns about road conditions.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we will engage in eLearning on Friday, Jan. 10,” the district said on its website. All extracurricular activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday will be canceled.
▪ Union County Public Schools will be closed Friday, the district announced Thursday afternoon.
“There is no remote instruction for students on Jan. 10. A make-up day is not needed,” the UCPS website said. All facilities will be closed and activities canceled Jan. 10 and Jan. 11. High school principals will share updated exam schedules with students and parents by Friday.
▪ York School District will use remote learning Friday. District facilities will close. Athletic events for Friday and Saturday are canceled.
