Some Charlotte-area schools announce Monday delays, closures after snow, ice storm
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will return to its normal schedule after a snow and ice storm on Friday, according to an online announcement. Other districts say they’ll start later or close altogether.
Friday’s storm dropped less than an inch of snow across much of the Charlotte area, with higher totals in the foothills and mountains, according to preliminary totals from the National Weather Service. Areas southeast of the mountains saw higher ice totals, with a quarter-inch reported in Gaston, York and Union counties.
Temperatures rose into the 40s over the weekend, but “there are still many icy areas,” the Mooresville Graded School District said when announcing a two-hour delay on Monday.
Monday schedules for Charlotte-area school districts are as follows:
▪ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says it will return to normal bell schedules and that district offices will also be open for normal operations. ASEP, after-school programs and athletic events also will return to normal schedules.
“Temperatures will remain below freezing for the morning commute to school so we ask that staff, families and students drive and walk carefully as there may be patches of black ice on some roadways and sidewalks.,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said in an announcement on its website.
▪ Cabarrus County Schools will have a two-hour delay Monday to “allow additional time for road conditions to improve,” the district said in an announcement on its website.
▪ Catawba County Schools will be closed “due to continued icy road conditions.” Monday will be an optional teacher workday for staff.
▪ Chester City Schools hasn’t announced any change in its schedule for Monday.
▪ The Clover School District will return to a regular schedule on Monday.
“As students, staff and parents return to campus tomorrow morning, we urge you to exercise caution, as icy patches remain on some drives and parking lots,” the school district said in its announcement. “Two notable icy spots are the areas in front of Clover School District Auditorium and behind Clover Middle School.”
▪ The Fort Mill School District hasn’t announced any changes to its schedule for Monday.
▪ Gaston County Schools will have a one-hour delay on Monday because of remaining snow on roads and parking lots refreezing overnight. The one-hour delay will allow for morning bus routes to occur after daybreak, Gaston County Schools said in its announcement.
▪ Hickory City Schools will have a remote learning day on Monday. The district’s school board meeting also will be at 3 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. because of the weather.
▪ Iredell-Statesville Schools will have a remote learning day because of “lingering ice and snow impacting the roadways.”
▪ Kannapolis City Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Monday.
▪ Lancaster County School District hasn’t announced any changes to its plans for Monday.
▪ Lincoln County Schools will have a two-hour delay for students and staff on Monday.
▪ Mooresville Graded School District will have a two-hour delay on Monday. A two-hour delay means the day will start and that bus pickup times will be two hours later than normal.
▪ Rock Hill Schools hasn’t announced any changes to its schedule for Monday.
▪ Rowan-Salisbury Schools will have a remote learning day Monday.
“The RSS Transportation department traveled roads throughout Rowan County this afternoon and found that many are still covered in snow and ice,” the district said in an announcement on its website. “The conditions of these roads would make driving dangerous for our school buses and student drivers, and temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until after 9 am.”
▪ York School District hasn’t announced any changes to its schedule for Monday.
