  • Two individuals arrested after weapons detected at Palisades High entrance.
  • CMS confirmed body scanners flagged the weapons during school entry checks.
  • Incident follows August gunshot at school, which ended in a juvenile arrest.

Two people were arrested Monday morning after bringing weapons to a high school campus, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials say.

The people were detected with weapons at the entry of Palisades High School in southwest Charlotte when they walked through the school’s body scanners. District officials didn’t specify what kind of weapons were found and whether the people arrested were adults or students. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were immediately called.

Scanners are located in every CMS high school, middle school and K-8 school campus.

“It is illegal to bring weapons onto school grounds,” CMS Chief Operations Officer Tim Ivey said at a news conference Monday afternoon. “We take this very seriously, and we will not tolerate it.”

The incident occurred on the first day of school for most of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and nearly a week after a gunshot was reported at Palisades High School August 18. No one was hurt in that incident, Palisades Principal Erik Olejarczyk wrote to families in an Aug. 20 message.

“No one witnessed or heard the shot. Once a broken window in the office was discovered, emergency protocol was activated, and law enforcement was notified,” Olejarczyk wrote. “CMPD led the investigation, which resulted in a juvenile suspect being quickly identified and arrested at a location off of the campus.”

The Charlotte Observer’s news partner, WSOC-TV. reported the Aug. 18 incident occurred when a football player who had been cut from the team fired a shot into the school building.
