South Mecklenburg High School Principal Maureen Furr was named principal of the year Tuesday for the 12-district southwest region. That means she’ll be among eight competing for the state title in April.

Furr has worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since 1992 and has been principal of South Meck, which is the district’s largest school, since 2006.

Furr is the third CMS principal – and the second from South Meck – to win the regional award in the past 10 years.

Her predecessor, Marian Yates, was regional and state principal of the year in 2006, and Bruns Elementary Principal Steve Hall took the regional title in 2009.

Bobbie Cavnar, an English teacher at Gaston County’s South Point High School, is the southwest regional teacher of the year.
