Mecklenburg
Master’s Academy Greyfriars Classical Academy Covenant Day School
Exam awards: Students from the three schools placed on the National Classical Etymology Exam, which tests Latin and Greek derivatives and their usage in the English language. From Master’s Academy Cory Hickey and Laura Schoeck earned bronze medals at the advanced level. At the intermediate level Caris Gross and Alex Ratliff earned a silver and bronze medal, respectively. At the novice level Abby Levinson earned a gold medal and Tate Clemons, Aislinn Niimi, Genevieve Romanelli and Anna Trejo each earned a silver medal. From Greyfriars Classical Academy, Nathaniel McGowan earned a silver medal and Rebecca Claxton and Anna Lise McGowan earned a bronze medal at the intermediate level. Jonah Starr earned a bronze medal at the novice level. From Covenant Day School Susanna Schoeck earned a silver medal at the intermediate level.
Providence High
Wrestling distinction: Ryan Keefe has more than150 career wins as a wrestler and currently holds the school record for most wins. The senior wrestler pinned his opponent from South Mecklenburg recently in a match that lasted approximately 38 seconds. Keefe is coached by William Houghton.
Charlotte Latin School
Associate headmaster: D. Rodney (Rod) Chamberlain has been appointed associate headmaster for academic affairs effective July 1. Chamberlain serves as head of schools for the Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii. He holds a B.S. in elementary education from Elizabethtown College and M.Ed and D.Ed degrees from Pennsylvania State University.

College high school program: The CMS Middle College High School Program is looking for student participation in the upcoming school year. Students may take college and high school courses at CPCC’s Levine, Harper or Cato campuses. Students interested should apply through the CMS lottery and would need to plan to attend school full time at one of the CPCC campuses listed. For information, students should contact their school counselor.
South Mecklenburg High
Principal of the Year: Maureen Furr has been named the Southwest Region Principal of the Year by NC Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Ann Clark. Furr will now compete for the state’s Wells Fargo Principal of the Year award which will be announced in May.
Providence Day School
Teacher award: Ted Dickson has been selected to receive the 2015 Tom and Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award by the Mecklenburg chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. In the contest submission essay Dickson discussed the importance of teaching the American Revolutionary era. He advances to the statewide contest which will be held in February.
Charlotte Country Day School
Technology distinction: The school has recently received approval as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified School. The certification recognizes efforts in teaching digital literacy and citizenship to young people and engaging the school community in the discussion. In addition, the following teachers and librarians received recognition as a Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified Educator: Samantha Bosco, Anne Edwards, Megan Fink, Chad Jarrett, Sherri Leonard, Stacy Lynch, Karen Oldham, Michael Rinehart, David Sanders, Kasey Short, Jody Specker, Jordan Starck, Karen Sullivan and Kelly Zander.
Charlotte Christian School
Reading program: During the second quarter, 324 lower school students participated in the Reading Knights program by reading 5,737 books. The incentive program was designed to encourage reading and instill a lifelong love of books in lower school students.
York
Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center
Program award: The school’s automotive training program has recently received accreditation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The program received accreditation in two areas, maintenance and light repair. The school’s technology center features a high-quality automotive lab which provides hands-on experience for students in automotive work.
Westminster Catawba Christian School
Shooting clay completion: The school’s sporting clay team competed in the SC Youth Shooting Foundation event held Jan. 9. The JV team of KJ Jones, Travis Howell and Fulton Curtis placed fourth out of 30 teams. Individually KJ Jones won first place in his division with the highest JV score out of 80 shooters. Other participating team members were Varsity student Joseph Snipes and middle school students Matthew McMarley, Max Henderson, Matthew O’Steen, Alea McDaniel, Justin McDaniel and Viktor Henderson.
Rock Hill District
Personnel appointment: Bill Cook Jr. has been selected as the Rock Hill School district executive director of secondary education. Cook most recently served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Gaston County Schools. He holds degrees from East Carolina University and Wingate University.
Ebinport Elementary
SIC honor roll: The school’s School Improvement Council is one of ten in South Carolina to be named to the SC School Improvement Council’s 2016 Honor Roll for its significant efforts to foster civic engagement in public education. The school’s work centers on providing a strong academic foundation, in addition to using focused initiatives to meet social, emotional and physical needs to their students. Ebinport will now compete for the SC SIC annual Dick and Tunky Riley Award for School Improvement Council Excellence.
Clover High
App award: Five students have been selected as the winning team in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge for the state of South Carolina. The team was selected for their concept of Crash Helper app, a tool to be used in the event of an accident. The team will now advance regionally and will submit a new video promoting the app and its functions. Team members are Brandon Eish, Tyler DeFalco, Carson Stabell, Dale Trimper and Grant Williams.
Clover High
Alive at 25: Three Alive at 25 classes have been scheduled at 9 a.m. Feb. 20, March 19 and April 16 at the school. The 4.5-hour lclasses are offered by the National Safety Council and are taught by certified law enforcement officers. The cost is $35 per student. The program is a requirement for students wishing to drive and park on the school campus.
Banks Trail Middle
Spelling bee: Alexis Simpson won the Fort Mill School District Spelling Bee. The eighth-grader won the event by correctly spelling Chihuahua.
UNION
UPCS
Educator recognitions: Todd Ebert, Larry Robinson and Lisa Schilling were recently recognized by the Union County Board of Education for outstanding work in their classrooms. The board recognized the teachers and their programs for their accomplishments. Ebert, Cuthbertson High director of bands, and Katie Ebert, band director at Cuthberson Middle, had earlier received distinction when the Cuthbertson Band Program was selected as a National Band Association Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence. Robinson, theater teacher at Central Academy of Technology and Arts, had received the CC Lipscomb Award for Excellence in Directing for the play “The Diviners.” Some of his students had also received awards for the play and the play itself won awards. Antioch Elementary teacher Lisa Schilling was recognized for her selection as UCPS AIG Teacher of the Year for 2015-2016.
Parkwood High
Service project: Students in Morgon Outing’s Apparel Development I class recently designed and created pillowcases to support Ryan’s Case for Smiles. The unique and whimsical items were delivered to several area hospitals. Ryan’s Case for Smiles is a worldwide organization that provides support to young patients and their families.
Sun Valley High
Band honors: Emmanuel Alvarez, Lynslie Higgs, Branden Rucci and Natia Skorupski were selected to the South Central All District Honor Band. Alternates include Erin Blanding and Reyna Jeanniton.
MSITA awards: Melinda Miller’s Microsoft Word and Power Point students received Microsoft IT Academies Certification recently. The certification requires achieving 700 out of 1,000 points on the MSITA certification exam. In Miller’s first period class, 100 percent of the students obtained certifications in Word and Power Point and 88 percent of her third-period class certified. Two students received perfect scores of 1,000.
East Union Middle
Spelling bee: Jada Barrino won the 2015-2016 East Union Spelling Bee. Dylan Phillips is the runner up. Barrino won the championship by correctly spelling vague and chortle.
