About 1,000 people came to Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews Tuesday night for a meeting on student assignment in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Paul Bailey, the school board member who represents the south suburbs, got applause and cheers when he proclaimed his support for neighborhood schools.

Parents in southern schools are organizing to resist changes that would disrupt their schools. Many wore green T-shirts saying “#Close-To-Home-Schools #NOforcedbusing.”

The school board is reviewing its assignment policy for changes to take effect in 2017-18.
