8th-grader wins N.C. MATHCOUNTS

Randolph IB Middle eighth-grader Zack Lee won the state competition at MATHCOUNTS, held at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.

Zack, whose performance was best among 164 students representing 44 schools, has participated in two math competitions in China. He achieved a perfect score two years in a row in the AMC 8 – a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice exam in middle school mathematics – and this year had a perfect score in the AMC 10 (10th-grade level).

He advanced to the MATHCOUNTS national finals in Orlando, Fla., on May 9.

Teammate Sahil Patel finished fourth individually in the state for Randolph, which was fourth in team competition. Aman Singh of Jay M. Robinson Middle finished seventh; his school was third. South Charlotte Middle was sixth.

In MATHCOUNTS, students compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry.
