Davidson Elementary ditches chairs for exercise balls

Twenty-three classrooms at Davidson Elementary have ditched the traditional desk chair for exercise balls as a way to keep students focused.

Instead of slouching and gazing off into space, students on an exercise ball have to keep their mind engaged to stay balanced, administrators at the school say. The balls give the kids a way to direct their inclination to move in a healthy way while still paying attention to the lesson.

Research going back more than a decade has shown that using the stability balls for seating can have positive effects.

Several Davidson businesses helped pay for the exercise balls. The first was the Charlotte Pediatric Dentistry office in the town.

“If your brain is engaged, then it’s focused,” Dr. David Moore of Charlotte Pediatric Dentistry said. “Now they’re paying attention to the conversation around them. More importantly, they’re paying attention to the teacher.”
