These Charlotte-area organizations provide resources to domestic violence victims
About a third of men and women in North Carolina experience domestic violence during their lifetimes, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
In 2020, national domestic violence hotlines received as many as 21,321 calls daily — that’s ,15 calls every minute, the most recent data available from the NCADV shows.
October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month to connect organizations with victims and bring the issue front and center.
While there are few outreach programs and entities in the Charlotte area offering assistance to those who are victims of domestic violence, most of them are free and readily available to those in need.
Safe Alliance — a Charlotte nonprofit — aims to “provide healing to those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault,” as stated onthe organization’s website. Some programs offered are listed below:
- Greater Charlotte Hope Line. Victims can call the 24-hour hotline at 980-771-4673 for assistance with domestic violence or sexual assault.
Clyde and Ethel Dickson Domestic Violence Shelter: The emergency shelter for victims and their children can be reached at 980-771-4673.
Victim Assistance Court Program: Victims can call 704-312-1667 for assistance with filing domestic violence protective orders.

Mecklenburg County Community Support Services
Mecklenburg County Community Support Services offers confidential individual and group therapy to people experiencing domestic violence. Licensed therapists also provide counseling, case management and personal advocacy services. To schedule a session, register for support groups or get additional information, call 704-336-3210.
My Sister’s House
My Sister’s House, a temporary housing shelter for women, provides life skills classes, individual and group therapy and financial literacy workshops that focus on mental, physical, financial, spiritual and legal health. Candidates must be single, 18 or older, drug and alcohol free, employed or in school, and referred through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Coordinated Assessment. For more information, call 704-200-2807.
Atrium Health
Atrium Health offers free, 24-hour services to domestic violence victims., according to their website. The program at Atrium provides assistance by assessing the risk factors of victims, emotional support and education about the mental and emotional impacts of domestic violence.
