How cheap is fuel in Charlotte? Gas at one NC chain is $2 a gallon for Thanksgiving
The Thanksgiving travel rush is in full swing in Charlotte and throughout the region.
With millions expected to hit the road, many will also be headed to the pump to fill up their vehicles for trips. And this year’s news for drivers is a bit of a mixed bag, AAA says.
One chain of gas stations with locations in North Carolina is offering discounted gas.
Here’s what to know about gas prices this holiday week:
Charlotte gas prices
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in North Carolina is $3.30, per AAA, less than the national average of $3.63.
In the Charlotte metro area, the average is almost identical: $3.30. Mecklenburg County’s average was slightly higher Tuesday, at $3.31.

Does Thanksgiving drive up gas prices?
The good news for drivers this Thanksgiving week, AAA notes, is that gas prices have dropped in the last week and are down from the record highs seen earlier in the year.
However, the group notes, the national average this year is the highest it’s been on Thanksgiving “since AAA started keeping records in 2000.”
“The national average has fallen sharply since the June peak of nearly $5.02,” AAA spokesman Andrew Gross said. “But this Thanksgiving will be about 20 cents higher than a year ago, and a dollar more per gallon than a pre-pandemic 2019. However, we can be thankful that gas prices are moving in the right direction for now.”
