How far does a $100,000 salary stretch in Charlotte? One study crunched the numbers
With inflation driving up the cost of living in many countries, six-figure salaries don’t go as far as they used to.
In fact, 51% of people who earned more than $100,000 reported living paycheck to paycheck in December 2022, according to a recent survey.
But how do high-income residents in Charlotte fare?
Of the 76 largest cities in the U.S., Charlotte came in at No. 29, with those earning $100,000 taking home $72,985 annually, according to a current study from SmartAsset, a personal finance website.
To see how much $100,000 is worth in different parts of the country, SmartAsset compared the after-tax income in each city, then adjusted those numbers for the cost of living in each place.
Charlotte earned the second-highest rank among North Carolina cities, landing two spots behind Winston-Salem, with a calculated take-home pay of $73,214. Raleigh and Durham were included on the list, coming in at No. 33 and No. 41, respectively.
Memphis took the No. 1 spot on the list, with calculated take-home pay of $86,444. El Paso, Oklahoma City, Corpus Christi and Lubbock rounded out the top five.
