A Charlotte-area Chinese restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of live and dead insects.

China Express, 315 S. Polk St., in Pineville, received a score of 86 during its May 23 inspection.

Health department inspectors cited the restaurant after finding “four large roaches in the rear portion of the kitchen,” documents show. The restaurant was also written up when inspectors noticed dead insects under a sink in the kitchen.

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Moldy bell pepper in walk-in cooler

  • Food stored uncovered in coolers

  • Dead roaches inside pans stored as clean

  • Shrimp, chicken, pork, peas, carrots, lo mein and pot stickers stored above required temperatures

  • Food buildup on shelves inside walk-in cooler

This is the restaurant’s second “B” grade.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70 percent.

The Charlotte Observer contacted the restaurant for comment regarding its score prior to publication.
