Though gas prices usually go down after the Fourth of July, Charlotte drivers are paying more at the pump now than they were during the holiday.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Charlotte is $3.55, up from $3.39 a week ago, according to AAA.

Metrics compiled by AAA show that the national average gas price rose 13 cents in the last week to $3.71.

The spike in gas prices, the agency said in a news release, is due to the high cost of oil.

“Gas demand has fallen nearly 10 percent since the holiday, as folks have returned to their day-to-day driving routines,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said. “Typically, this would lower gas prices, but such a move is being countered for now by the increasing cost for oil, the main ingredient in gasoline.”

The rise in oil prices comes after Saudi Arabia – one of the world’s largest oil producers – announced it would cut its supply by 1 million barrels a day, the New York Times reported.
