As autumn temperatures continue to drop, so will the leaves in Charlotte. If you want to clean up your yard from fallen leaves, you can have them picked up as part of trash collection.

The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services collects yard waste, including fallen leaves, every week. But there are certain methods for how it should be prepared and packed to be picked up.

Here’s what you should know about weekly yard waste collection during leaf season in Charlotte:

City of Charlotte yard waste collection

Place yard waste within 6 feet of the curb and at least 3 feet away from other collection items, by 6 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Make sure to put leaves and grass clippings in paper yard waste bags or reusable personal containers less than 75 pounds. Any debris in plastic bags will not be collected.

In addition to fallen leaves, you can also have brush, limbs and logs, depending on the size. If you’d any from your yard to your collection pickup, here’s how it should be packed:

  • Brush: Must be no longer than 5 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. Separate into piles that are no longer than 5 feet long and 3 feet high with 2 feet in between each pile.

  • Limbs: Must be no longer than 5 feet in length and no larger than 4 inches in diameter. Separate in piles that are no longer than 5 feet long and 3 feet high with 2 feet in between each pile. Limbs may also be placed in containers, but should not be tied.

  • Logs: Must be under 4 inches. Tree stumps will not be collected.
