In the 1960s, the former Duke Power created a 34-mile-long reservoir off the Catawba River to supply energy to new industries in the northern Charlotte region.

That reservoir was named Lake Norman, and the area surrounding it has been growing and changing ever since.

Maybe you know of Lake Norman as the closest place to Charlotte where you can enjoy a summer day on the water. Or maybe it’s the place to spot massive homes of NASCAR drivers and business CEOs.

Or maybe it’s just where you live.

Whatever the case, The Charlotte Observer wants to tell the stories of the area, and we’re adding coverage to try to keep up with the demands of our audience in all parts of the region.

On Oct. 19, The Charlotte Observer launched The Lake Norman Observer newsletter as a way to connect with readers and focus on stories in that area.

Veteran reporter Joe Marusak, a Mooresville resident, and Evan Moore, a Denver native, as the lead reporters for the newsletter. They already know the area well, but they’ll spend time trying to find the best and most informative stories for our readers.

We’ll look at everything from stories on developments planned to government news you should know to the latest restaurant openings to what is happening with traffic in the area (aside from it consistently being pretty terrible).

Sign up for The Lake Norman Observer at charlotteobserver.com/newsletters to have the newsletter delivered straight to your inbox every Wednesday evening.

We want to tell stories that you’re most interested in, so email us any ideas for coverage at lakenorman@charlotteobserver.com.
