The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $20.8 million contract to a Cabarrus County firm for a road project to improve traffic flow in the Lake Norman region, the agency announced Tuesday.

Sealand Contractors Corp. would complete a 1.75-mile roadway section that will extend Northcross Drive in Huntersville between N.C. 73 and Westmoreland Road in Cornelius, according to a news release from NCDOT.

The project also includes adding a roundabout at the intersection of Westmoreland Road and Eagleridge Way Lane in Cornelius.

According to NCDOT’s interactive traffic volume map, the segment of Westmoreland Road that intersects with Eagleridge Way Lane has an average annual daily traffic volume of 10,000 trips.

The contractor could start the project as soon as this fall, with completion scheduled for 2026.
