Couple arraigned in Lake Norman golf cart accident that killed a 13-year-old girl
A couple charged in a Lake Norman golf cart accident that killed 13-year-old Julia Rooney waived their rights to a lawyer during their arraignment hearings on Thursday, court records show.
Jeffrey and Sherrie Comitz of Mooresville face misdemeanor charges that include contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and allowing an unlicensed person to drive, according to court documents.
The couple’s 13-year-old daughter was driving the golf cart, court records show.
Police: Several young people involved
Mooresville police said the incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. March 23 and involved several young people at the intersection of Swamp Rose Drive and Golden Star Lane.
That’s in a subdivision between Beech Tree Road and Forest Lake Boulevard, both of which are off Brawley School Road near the Woodland Heights elementary and middle schools.
Julia was the front-seat passenger in the golf cart, police said in a news release. She fell from the cart when the driver made a left turn at low speed, police said.
“Our thoughts are with the families impacted during this difficult time,” police said at the time.
Jeffrey Comitz also is charged with not having liability insurance and allowing a driver to operate a vehicle without registration, court records show.
A judge scheduled a hearing to rule on the charges for Sept. 10 in Iredell County Criminal District Court in Mooresville.
