Two new recalls connected with a 17-state listeria outbreak that’s had four deaths

There are no new illnesses but two new food recalls since March in the listeria outbreak linked to enoki mushrooms.

Guan’s Mushrooms and H&C Food have pulled their enoki mushrooms imported from South Korea. The CDC says South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Safety found listeria in two enoki mushroom producers.

Though the CDC considers the outbreak ongoing, the number sickened remains at 36, with 30 hospitalizations and four deaths.

California has the most with nine followed by New York (four); Hawaii and Virginia (three each); Florida, Arizona, Massachusetts and Maryland (two each); and one each in Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Tennessee.

Listeria strikes about 1,600 Americans each year, killing about 260, mostly people over 65 years old or children under 5. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths. Otherwise, there’s the usual fever, headache, stomachache and nausea often associated with foodborne illnesses.

Anyone who has had the below products in their homes should clean and sanitize all surfaces, utensils, cookware and dishes they touched. That includes the refrigerator.

“Listeria can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces,” the FDA said.

Guan’s Mushrooms of Commerce, California recalled all cases of its Enoki Mushrooms, which were distributed in California, New York and Pennsylvania. The 7.05-ounce bags have “Enoki Mushroom” in English, Korean and French, UPC No. 859267007013 and package code No. 14-1. State of California testing turned up listeria in these mushrooms.

H&C Food of Brooklyn is recalling its Enoki mushrooms distributed in New York, Maryland and Virginia via Great Wall Supermarket from Feb. 5 through March 5. The 7.05-ounce packs have have a green label and carry UPC No. 831211204181.

H&C Food got its enoki mushrooms from Green Co. of South Korea. The FDA says an import sample tested positive for listeria on April 6 with samples that matched the strain in the listeria outbreak. The FDA slapped an Import Alert 99-23 on all Green Co. shipments, which allows for “detention without physical examination of produce due to contamination with human pathogens.”

Sun Hong Foods of Montebello, California, recalled Enoki Mushrooms distributed in Florida, California, Texas, Oregon, Washington and Illinois and sold in, among other stores, J&L Supermarket, Jusgo Supermarket, ZTao Market, New Sang Supermraket and Galleria Market. The state of Michigan found listeria in samples of Sun Hong mushrooms.

Those with questions can call Sun Hong at 323-597-1112, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Eastern time.
