Former State Sen. Malcolm Graham believes his sister was inside Emanuel AME Church when a white man opened fire during a prayer meeting at the historic black church in downtown Charleston on Wednesday night.

Nine people were shot to death, including the pastor.

Graham, who is from Charleston, told the Observer early Thursday that his sister’s condition was unclear. Police haven’t released the IDs of the victims.

The former Charlotte City Council member was on his way to Charleston.

His wife said they’ve been up all night and that the family is asking for privacy.
