A car hurtled off an Ocean Beach cliff Monday night in San Diego, injuring a 9-year-old girl inside, California police said.

The girl’s mother told police the car’s brakes failed, sending it flying off the cliff to the rocks below at 7:30 p.m., The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Onlookers reported hearing screams from the car, traveling about 50 mph, as it careened toward the cliff at the end of a dead-end street, according to the publication.

Firefighters rescued the mother and her 9-year-old daughter from the wreckage, KSWB reported. The girl was taken to a hospital with cuts to her face.

She was unconscious when firefighters rescued her, KFMB reported. The mother was not injured.

San Diego police are investigating the crash, KGTV reported.
