An inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials revealed an unexpected item in a man’s backpack.

On April 23, agriculture specialists searched a backpack that belonged to a 26-year-old man, a U.S. citizen, who arrived at the El Paso, Texas, border inspection from Mexico, officials said in a news release.

An X-ray revealed “anomalies” in the backpack, the release said. Officials discovered a speaker inside the backpack, which held plastic bags.

A crystal-like substance inside the plastic bags tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the release.

Six bags weighing 2.57 pounds total were confiscated from the speaker box, the release said.

“CBP agriculture specialists are trained to detect all threats, not just dangerous pests inside prohibited plant and food products,” El Paso Acting Port Director Samuel Cleaves said in the release.

The man was turned over to Homeland Security for prosecution.
