Couple found shot in parking lot as they rent car during trip to Colorado, cops say
A man has been arrested after police in Colorado say he shot two people who were renting a car at an Enterprise retailer.
The couple was visiting Denver from Ohio, according to WKRC.
Officers were dispatched to the Enterprise on Friday, May 6, and found the two victims with gunshot wounds in the parking lot, said Joe Montoya, division chief of investigations for the Denver Police Department. He said they were both patrons at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
They were taken to a hospital, where the husband died, according to police. The wife was listed in critical condition as of May 6.
A witness to the shooting spotted the suspect, 30-year-old Derron Harris, and he was taken into custody by Denver police, Montoya said. He is being held on a first-degree murder charge.
A motive for the shooting is unclear, Montoya said, but it’s believed there was no connection to Harris and the victims.
The husband was a 1985 graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati and worked on a pharmacy team for TriHealth, The Cincinnati Enquirer said.
“If everyone in the Elder community and outside the Elder community could keep the family and friends and everyone who knew them in their prayers and pray for peace in their lives and pull for (the wife) to come through successfully,” said Brian Bill, the alumni director at the school, according to the Enquirer.
The couple’s children recently graduated from the same high school as their father, Elder High School principal Kurt Ruffing told WCPO. He called the shooting “very tragic.”
“They just lost their father so tragically,“ Ruffing said. “I’m just praying that they have peace and comfort to get through this.”
