Driver rams family on walk, kills toddler and dad with shotgun, Montana police say

The Siau family was walking down a road in East Glacier Park Village in Montana when tragedy struck.
As the family — a mother, father, aunt and three children — were walking on the evening of Sunday, July 17, a man drove his car into them, according to the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office.
But the sheriff’s office says the man, Derick Amos Madden, 37, of Goldsby, Oklahoma, wasn’t done.
Madden got out of the car and started firing a shotgun, officials said. First, he is accused of shooting and killing David Siau, 39, of Syracuse, New York.
As the other family members tried to run away, the sheriff’s office said, he continued firing.
Christy Siau, 40, of Syracuse, New York, was carrying her 18-month-old daughter, McKenzie Siau, when she and her toddler daughter were shot, officials said.
When he was done firing, Madden attacked Christina Siau, 30, of East Glacier Park Village, Montana, with a knife, according to officials.
“During this attack Christina fought for her life,” officials said.
Though she was injured, Christina Siau was able to fight Madden off, fatally wounding him, officials said.
The two other Siau children were able to escape the attack uninjured, according to officials.
Christy, Christina and McKenzie Siau were taken to the Indian Health Service in Browning, where the toddler was pronounced dead, officials said. As Christy and Christina were critically injured, they were “flown on to a higher level of care.”
A friend of David Siau’s said it “is an understatement” that he was devastated by the news of his friend’s death.
“David was a friend since before I could remember. We played together, laughed and cried together. Matured together,” the friend shared on Facebook. “I stood at his wedding. His kids played with my kids. We love the Siaus. Man, I am gonna miss you.”
More friends went on to describe Christy and David Siau’s relationship as “beautiful.”
“Knowing them for years (Christy found the love of her life,” the friend wrote on Facebook.
Officials did not give a motive for the attack. Madden was previously in a relationship with Christina Siau, according to the release, and also suffered from “mental health issues.”
East Glacier Park Village is about 250 miles north of Butte.
