A boat was seen going in circles before a body was found in nearby water, South Carolina officials said.

Crews started searching for a missing person after the empty boat was discovered on Sunday, Sept. 4. It was spotted after 8 p.m. near the James Island Yacht Club in Charleston, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

Officials said the Coast Guard flew a helicopter overnight as part of the search. Then early on Sept. 5, a person was found dead near the yacht club.

“We are able to confirm the body that was recovered was the operator of the boat,” officials told McClatchy News in an email. “Our officers are still investigating to determine what happened.”

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Sept. 6.
