Hiker who died in Arizona heat was a new dad, reports say. ‘She looks just like him’
A new dad and “gifted” doctor has been identified as the hiker who died of heat exhaustion on Labor Day after his group ran out of water halfway through their Arizona hike, media reports say.
Scottsdale firefighters rescued six people near Cave Creek after they became lost on a trail Monday, Sept. 5, McClatchy News previously reported.
One hiker, Evan Dishion, 32, was taken to the hospital, where he died, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in an email to McClatchy News.
Dishion was a neurology resident at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, FOX 10 reported.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Dr. Evan Dishion. Dr. Dishion was a bright and gifted physician … ” the institute said, according to the outlet. “He was a kind and generous person.”
Dishion leaves behind his wife, Amy Dishion, and 3-month-old daughter, Chloe, according to a GoFundMe set up for the family.
“Since Chloe came, he hasn’t had as much time with his friends between residency,” Amy Dishion told ABC 15. “I feel like normally I would have pushed back a little harder about the heat.”
Dishion, originally from Salem, Oregon, came to Phoenix to start his career as a neurologist after graduating from Creighton Medical School in 2021, according to a GoFundMe.
“In his career as a medical student and resident physician in Phoenix, he was known for his dedication to his patients and his kind and hard-working character in the hospital and clinic,” the GoFundMe says.
More than anything, though, Dishion wanted to be a father.
After four miscarriages, the couple’s dreams came true with Chloe’s birth, Arizona Family reported.
“She looks just like him,” Amy Dishion told the outlet. “When he saw Chloe, the nurses told me he looked at her with this admiration and said, ‘I didn’t know I could love anyone so much. I just love her so much.’ He really did. He loved her so much. So now I have a piece of him here.”
Cave Creek is about 30 miles northeast of Phoenix.
