A 9-year-old boy was in the backseat of a car when he was shot in the face and chest during a road rage clash, Washington police said.

The shooting happened on Route 167 near Grady Way in Renton on Friday, Nov. 11, according to a news release from Washington State Patrol.

The boy, Isaiah, was in a Dodge Durango when it came to an intersection with a dark blue Mustang, according to WSP, KING 5 News reported. The Durango’s driver had gotten out of the SUV and approached the other car, at which point the driver inside the Mustang fired.

Isaiah “was struck once in the mouth and once in the upper chest,” WSP Lt. Chris Noll told KOMO News. “The child has two separate wounds but we’re not sure if it’s from the same bullet or two separate bullets.”

The Ford Mustang fled the scene, according to the release.

The shooting left Isaiah with “life threatening injuries,” according to a tweet from Trooper Rick Johnson.

“It does seem like we see more and more of these and I would imagine for any parent this is the worst possible outcome,” Noll told KING 5 News.

Isaiah underwent surgery and was recovering at Harborview Medical Center, according to a GoFundMe for the family.

“He is alive and well!! It is incredible what Isaiah has gone through; he seems to be in good spirits,” a Nov. 12 update on GoFundMe said.

Police said they are still looking for the driver of the Mustang, and anyone with information is asked to contact Washington State Patrol.

Renton is about 30 miles northeast of Tacoma.
