As an 80-year-old grandmother was alone in her room scratching off a lottery ticket that her daughter bought her , she began to see “some positive numbers.”

First, the Washington, D.C., woman saw the number “38” with $10,000 listed beside it, Maryland Lottery said in a Sept. 5 news release.

“I thought something was wrong,” the woman told lottery officials.

Then, she found four more matches “with winning numbers, each worth a $10,000 prize,” lottery officials said.

So, lottery officials said, she took her scratch-off ticket with her to check with her daughter in the next room.

The woman’s daughter confirmed she had won $50,000, the second-tier prize for Lucky Times 10, a $10 game, lottery officials said.

The grandmother told lottery officials she won the day after her boyfriend sent her a palm plant for her birthday — a gift of luck that she credits for her big win.

The woman, a retired babysitter, told lottery officials that she plans to share her winnings with family.

“I have children and grandchildren who are waiting,” the woman said.
