Baby dies after crash with Amazon driver injures pregnant mother, Georgia cops say
A baby died after a crash with an Amazon driver sent a pregnant woman to a hospital in Georgia, officials said.
The 41-year-old expectant mother was riding in a pickup truck when the Amazon delivery vehicle turned into its path shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 11, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. The two vehicles collided, leaving the woman with serious injuries.
“The baby was subsequently delivered, and both mother and baby were placed in intensive care,” officers wrote Jan. 16 in a Facebook post. “During a follow-up investigation, ACCPD learned the newborn baby passed away.”
In response to a request for comment about the crash, Amazon shared a written statement with McClatchy News.
“This is a tragic accident, and our thoughts and sympathies are with those involved,” Austin Stowe, an Amazon spokesperson, said in a Jan. 17 email. “We are supporting our Delivery Service Partner and Athens-Clarke County Police Department as they investigate.”
The baby died Jan. 13, two days after the crash was reported near an intersection in Athens, home to the University of Georgia and roughly 75 miles northeast of Atlanta.
“The case is now being worked as a homicide by vehicle,” officers wrote in a news release.
Police said the Amazon vehicle was was going south when it turned in front of the northbound truck. The drivers of the two vehicles had minor injuries after the crash.
