1 dead, as many as 15 hurt in Chiefs Super Bowl victory rally shooting in Kansas City

One person is dead and up to 15 people were injured after gunfire broke out at the end of the Chiefs victory rally Wednesday at Union Station, according to police.

Kansas City Police Department Chief Stacey Graves confirmed the fatality and said 10 to 15 people had been shot.

She attributed the shooting to “two bad actors,” but said it was unclear if additional people were also responsible.

The motive remained unknown Wednesday afternoon.

Two people were taken into custody.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the shooting Wednesday was “absolutely a tragedy.”

Lucas said the city had been in touch with the Kansas City Chiefs and they reported everyone was accounted for. He also said the White House had been in touch and offered assistance in the investigation.

When the gunfire erupted, Lucas said he was inside Union Station and ran for safety. As he was leaving the scene, he saw Kansas City Fire Department crews administering aid to people who were seriously injured.

“I wish we lived in a world where we wouldn’t have to see incidents like this,” he said.

Graves said 800 law enforcement officers were working Wednesday’s rally.

She said people were out for a safe celebration and that she was “angry at what happened today.”

“This is not Kansas City.”

University Health spokeswoman Leslie Carto said the hospital was treating eight gunshot victims from Union Station. Two of them were in critical condition. Four others were being treated for injuries that were not gunshots. Carto said it was “a fluid situation.”

Gov. Mike Parson and his wife Teresa were at the rally.

“This was a tragic conclusion to a celebration we had all looked forward to – none more than Teresa and me,” he said in a statement. “The First Lady and I were present when shots broke out. Thanks to the professionalism of our security officers and first responders, Teresa and I and our staff are safe and secure.”
