Which celebrities can sway the youth vote? See who outranks Taylor Swift in new poll
Young Americans are not very enthusiastic about a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, but endorsements from certain celebrities — such as Zendaya, Beyoncé and Timothée Chalamet — could sway many of them, new polling reveals.
A May 20 poll from Blueprint, a pro-Biden public opinion research organization, asked voters aged 18 to 30 how endorsements from 42 celebrities would impact their choice for president.
The poll, which sampled 943 voters in April, has a margin of error of 5.8 percentage points.
It found that an endorsement from Zendaya, who recently starred in “Challengers” and “Dune: Part Two,” would have the greatest effect on young voters. Nearly one-quarter of respondents, 24%, said her seal of approval would make them more likely to support a candidate.
LeBron James and Kevin Hart placed behind her, with 21% of respondents saying their endorsements would make them more prone to cast their ballots for a candidate.
Notably Taylor Swift — who the Biden campaign has been eager to receive an endorsement from — came in 21st place in terms of net impact, with 20% of respondents saying her endorsement would affect their vote.
An endorsement from Elon Musk, on the other hand, would deter the most voters, with 26% of respondents saying his approval would make them less likely to support a candidate.
Similarly, an endorsement from Jake Paul — a YouTube star and boxer — would make 24% of respondents less likely to cast their ballot for a candidate.
For young Democrats, the five most influential celebrity endorsements would come from Zendaya, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa.
And for young Republicans, the top five endorsements would come from Kevin Hart, Taylor Swift, LeBron James, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.
Additionally, the most impactful endorsement for young men would come from LeBron James, and for young women, it would come from Zendaya.
“Never the most important day on a campaign, but sometimes the most fun, celebrity endorsements help show voters which campaign has momentum and can be a shot of adrenaline for volunteer, campaign workers, and supporters alike,” Alyssa Cass, lead strategist for Blueprint, said in a news release that showcased the poll.
“In a year where enthusiasm with young voters’ is at a new low, celebrities and credible messengers will be crucial to getting young people off the couch,” Cass said, “and both the Trump and Biden campaigns are keenly aware of that.”
