A lottery player checked her ticket — and the prize had her doing a double take.

“I looked it over a couple of times to be sure,” the $300,000 winner told the South Carolina Education Lottery. “It was exciting.”

The win was the real deal, and it came after the woman stopped for a drink in Pickens, a roughly 20-mile drive west from Greenville. She was at the Hot Spot convenience store when she decided she would also spend $10 on a lottery ticket.

It turns out, the ticket beat 1-in-1.08 million odds to score the top prize in The Rolling Jackpot scratch-off game, lottery officials wrote in a May 23 news release.

Though the lottery didn’t say how much the winner kept after taxes, she’s in no rush to spend her prize money.

“I’m saving it for a rainy day,” said the lucky player, who wasn’t identified in the release.

It’s not the first time a South Carolina lottery winner couldn’t believe their luck. Another man checked his ticket three times to make sure he was getting richer, McClatchy News reported in 2023.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
