Man wins big on Maryland lottery and still complains. ‘Just call him Oscar the Grouch’
A Maryland man bet big on “long-odds horses” — and it paid off, lottery officials said.
Despite winning $30,879 on Ractetrax — a computer-animated horse racing game — the Washington, D.C., man still found things to complain about when he showed up to claim his prize, according to a June 6 news release from the Maryland Lottery.
“Just call him Oscar the Grouch,” his daughter, who accompanied him to lottery headquarters, joked to officials.
While at the Baltimore office, the winner shared his opinions on topics like car brands, the differences between the Maryland and Virginia lotteries, and the fact that the Maryland Lottery was not headquartered in Annapolis.
But with grouchiness, there were also glimpses of gratitude and generosity.
“I was happy when I won it,” the winner said.
However, he told officials he’s only planning to keep enough to buy a tank of gas.
The rest he intends to split among his five grandchildren, he said.
He bought his winning ticket March 16 at the Lucky Mart in Colmar Manor and claimed his prize June 4, officials said.
He won on a “Trifecta Box bet on the long-odds horses 10, 11 and 12, with the total cost of the replayed ticket being $60 for 10 races,” lottery officials said.
“Normally, I play other numbers, but this time I had a feeling that this number would win,” the man said. “Oh boy, was I right!”
Colmar Manor is about a 6-mile drive northeast from Washington, D.C.
