How would Trump fare against a younger Democrat? What new poll found
If former President Donald Trump were to run against a younger Democrat in the upcoming election, he would be roundly defeated, according to a new poll.
The latest Emerson College poll found that an unspecified younger Democrat would outperform Trump in seven key swing states, in some cases by double-digit margins.
The poll, conducted between July 15 and 16, sampled 7,000 registered voters living in seven swing states. It has a credibility interval of 2.1 percentage points.
It comes during one of the most turbulent points in President Joe Biden’s time in office.
At least 18 Congressional Democrats have called on him to withdraw from the race following the first presidential debate in June, which was widely seen as a disaster for Biden, according to CBS News. And a July 17 Associated Press poll found 65% of Democratic voters want Biden to step aside.
The growing pressure for Biden to withdraw comes as multiple polls show him losing key swing states to Trump in a general election matchup.
Key findings
Respondents in seven swing states were asked to choose between Trump and a “younger Democrat who is qualified for the job.” A majority of respondents in all these states selected the younger Democrat.
The Democrat’s margin of victory was the largest in Georgia and Michigan, where they received 55% of the vote, compared to Trump’s 45%.
Wisconsin and Nevada had the second largest margins, with 54% of respondents choosing the Democrat and 46% choosing Trump.
In Arizona and Pennsylvania, the margins were closer, with the Democrat winning 53% and Trump winning 47%.
The race was the tightest in North Carolina, where the Democrat won 51% of the vote and Trump won 49%.
The poll also asked respondents to choose between Biden and an unspecified younger Republican.
In each of the seven states, the younger Republican beat Biden handily, and in all cases by more than 20 points.
However, unlike Biden, Trump has not faced a wave of calls to step aside from members of his own party.
