Woman has relative buy two lottery tickets. The prize on both leaves her ‘shocked’
A woman has won lottery prizes before but never like this, Maryland officials said.
The Charles County resident has taken home wins in Maryland and New York by playing relatives’ birthdays and anniversaries but her Aug. 30 prize of $100,000 doesn’t compare, according to a Sept. 4 news release from the Maryland Lottery.
The great-grandmother had a relative buy her two $1 Pick 5 tickets in Indian Head and he got a couple for himself, officials said.
She used a lucky date that’s important to one of her relatives as her five digits, officials said.
Once the tickets were checked, the two learned the winning numbers of 82869 matched the ones on her tickets, officials said.
She won $50,000 on each ticket, officials said.
“I was like, ‘I think you hit the number.’ We were shocked,” the winner’s relative told lottery officials.
The relative checked the tickets at the store’s scanner and saw the “Congratulations! $50,000 winner” message, officials said.
The winner, who lives with family members, plans to use the money toward home projects and a vacation with whatever is left over going into the bank, officials said.
Indian Head is about a 70-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
