The U.S. Postal Service announced it wants to raise the price of stamps five times through 2027.

First-class Forever stamps cost 73 cents, increased from 68 cents in July 2024.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s recommendation to not raise prices in January 2025 was accepted by the Postal Service’s Board of Governors, according to a Sept. 20 news release from the USPS.

“Our strategies are working and projected inflation is declining,” DeJoy said. “Therefore, we will wait until at least July before proposing any increases for market dominant services.”

The next price hike is planned for July 2025, and increases will be made “each January and July thereafter” through December 2027, the agency said in a rate adjustment document submitted Sept. 23 to the Postal Regulatory Commission.

This plan has not yet been approved by the commission.

Additionally, the proposed plan did not include how much each increase would be.

The USPS said it “remains committed to continued cost saving measures and to keeping its products and services affordable,” adding that “only a handful of countries have a lower price for a domestic single-piece letter.”
