Authorities in Florida are investigating after they say a 15-month-old baby was found dead in a car.

Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office were called to South Sumter Middle School in Webster at 4:18 p.m. Nov. 1, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

When deputies arrived, they found an infant dead, the sheriff’s office said.

The 15-month-old was “unintentionally left unattended” in a car parked at the school, deputies said.

“The child was present with a family member and was to be dropped off at daycare, however, the family member forgot the child was present and went to the school,” the sheriff’s office said.

The child was later found still in the car, dead, according to deputies.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the family of the child,” the sheriff’s office said.

Webster is about a 50-mile drive west of Orlando.
