A 16-year-old Nebraska boy died in a “car-surfing” accident, authorities said.

Officers responded at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 29 to reports of a boy “lying in the street with unknown injuries,” according to a news release from the Lexington Police Department.

Investigators learned three teens had been “car surfing” when one of them was injured.

According to police, a 14-year-old was driving the vehicle while a 13-year-old rode in the passenger seat and the 16-year-old surfed by lying on the hood of the moving vehicle.

The 14-year-old driver hit the brakes after thinking someone was backing out of a driveway, causing the 16-year-old to fall backward off the vehicle and hit his head on the street, police said.

The boy was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and died from his injuries Dec. 30, according to police.

Authorities said an investigation is ongoing.

Lexington is about a 165-mile drive west from Lincoln.
