12-year-old calls 911 after mom leaves to grab a package and never returns, TX cops say
A 12-year-old girl called 911 after her mother left home and failed to return, Texas authorities said.
Deputies responded Jan. 18 to a 911 from a girl who had been “abandoned at home” with her 9-year-old sibling while their mom went out drinking, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities learned their 36-year-old mother left the house around 5 p.m. and had been gone for over 10 hours, according to the release. McClatchy News is not naming the woman to protect the identities of the children involved.
Before leaving the house, she told her kids she was going to pick up a package from a friend nearby, but she never returned, authorities said.
During their investigation, investigators pinged the woman’s phone which led them to a San Antonio address, according to the sheriff’s office.
The woman “appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol” and told deputies she left her children home alone, authorities said.
She was arrested on two counts of abandoning or endangering a child and possession of a controlled substance, according to the release.
