Two workers die in fall from Nebraska wind turbine, cops say. Investigation underway
Two maintenance workers fell to their deaths from a wind turbine in Nebraska, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The maintenance crew working on the turbine suffered an “equipment failure,” causing Eddy Noriega Sebinet, 46, and Raidel Justiz Noriega, 37, to fall Feb. 22, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
“The accident remains under investigation,” authorities said.
Both men were Las Vegas residents, according to The Wayne Herald.
According to the United States Geological Survey’s U.S. Wind Turbine Database, the turbine is one of 82 that comprise the Plum Creek Project, south of Winside.
According to the survey, the site began operating in 2020 and the turbines are 500-feet tall.
Orsted, the company that owns the Plum Creek Project, operates onshore and offshore wind energy projects along with solar energy projects. According to a statement from Orsted spokesperson Tory Mazzola, the employees worked for the maintenance company WindCom.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the WindCom technicians’ families, and we are working with their employers to support them in any way we can,” Mazzola said. “An active investigation is underway with the proper authorities.”
GE Vernova, another company involved in the project, said it is “deeply saddened by the incident.”
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of those impacted,” the company said.
Winside is about 120 miles north of Lincoln.
