Man was high, driving to dispensary in crash that killed girl, Illinois officials say
A man was high on Delta-9 THC when he is accused of crashing into another vehicle, killing a 4-year-old girl, according to Illinois authorities and news reports.
Now, more than two years after the crash that killed Paityn Moore, 22-year-old Edgar Barrios is prison-bound. Barrios, who previously pleaded guilty to DUI-related charges, was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison, WBBM reported.
Barrios was already high on cannabis when he was driving to a dispensary in St. Charles on Oct. 1, 2022, WGN reported.
Driving 78 mph, Barrios lost control of his Chrysler 200, striking a Jeep Compass and causing a fiery scene, officials say, according to WFLD. Paityn, who was inside the Jeep, died after being taken to a hospital.
Paityn’s mother, according to a Facebook post, suffered severe injuries that caused her to be “immobilized for at least a year.”
A driver of a separate vehicle struck by Barrios’ vehicle also was injured, Fox Valley Magazine reported at the time.
Officials said blood and urine tests showed Barrios had Delta-9 THC in his system, WBBM reported.
As part of his sentencing, Barrios will be required to “serve at least 85 percent of his prison time,” according to WSPY.
“Edgar Barrios used bad judgment and made a selfish decision to get into a car and drive while he was under the influence of cannabis,” Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney David Belshan said in a statement to WFLD. “He blatantly disregarded the law and the safety of others. That decision cost a four-year-old girl her life and caused serious injuries to her mother.”
